Three Years Sober: Learning to Live the Life I Was Born to Live

Three Years Sober: Learning to Live the Life I Was Born to Live

On 19 September, I celebrate three years free from drugs and alcohol.

Three years ago, I made a decision that changed the direction of my life. At the time, I couldn't see what was waiting for me on the other side. I didn't have all the answers. I didn't know exactly who I would become.

I just knew that something had to change.

Recovery has taught me that change doesn't happen all at once. It happens through the small decisions we make every day. Choosing to keep going. Choosing to learn. Choosing to face the things we've spent years trying to escape.

And slowly, life began to look different.

At the end of last year, I became a published author. Now, my second book is being edited and formatted for publication. I've continued to deepen my knowledge of mental health, develop my craft, and build the skills I need to support others who may be navigating their own struggles.

When I look back, I sometimes find it hard to believe how far I've come.

The person who made that decision three years ago couldn't have imagined this life.

But that's the thing about change.

You don't always have to see where you're going. Sometimes, you just have to be brave enough to take the first step.

Life is changing because I changed.

And if you're struggling right now, I want you to remember something that took me a long time to understand:

Your past does not have to control your future.

You are not permanently defined by the worst chapter of your story.

Change is possible.
Recovery is possible.
A different life is possible.

Sometimes, it begins with one decision.

Then another.

And another.

Until one day, you look back and realise you've built a life you once couldn't even imagine.

Three years sober.
And still becoming.
